Top Tips To Encourage Your Child To Read

Reading with your child is not only an educational experience for your little one but a great way to spend quality time with them too.

Here are our top 7 tips to help your children enjoy reading:

1. Make books part of family life

Have books around the home so you can pick up a book and read with your child whenever there is a chance to read together. Lots of different genres and topics can create a great learning experience for all and inspire the search for knowledge.

2. Join your local library

Get your family a library card and pay a visit to your local library. Let the children pick their own books, whilst encouraging their interests. There’s something magical about books so make a day out to some of the UK’s best libraries. We loved Chetham Library in Manchester, steeped in history and almost used as the set for Hogwarts in Harry Potter, only being rejected as the crew and rig could not fit into the small room. You can read more about Chetham Library here in this great write up by the MEN

3. All reading is great

Don’t discount comics and magazines. Lots of modern day superheroes and characters originate in comics.  All kids love films so if you can draw their interest with their favourite character in a comic then it’s a win all round.

4. Get comfortable

Snuggle up somewhere warm and cosy with your little one, whether it is in bed, on a beanbag or the sofa, make sure it is relaxing and the television and devices are turned off. Get a drink and relax.

5. Ask questions

Keep your child interested in the story by regularly asking questions such as, “What do you think will happen next?” “What colour is that?” “Can you remember what happens next?”
This interaction will keep you both engaged in the story.

6. Read again and again

Encourage your child to re-read favourite books together. Getting to know a story together builds up fluency, vocabulary and confidence.

7. Make bedtime stories a regular feature

Reading together regularly is proven to improve literacy but it is also a great way to end the day together and spend some quality time with one another. You’re creating a lifetime of memories for both of you.
